N°6 - Porte de la Font
La porte de la Font est construite dans la partie du rempart XIVe siècle (deuxième enceinte)
Elle présente une bretèche avec mâchicoulis, un chemin de ronde couvert tardivement situé à l’arrière des créneaux et des merlons.
À l’extérieur de l’enceinte, pour une meilleure défense, a été édifiée, au XVIe siècle, une fortification en demi-étoile appelée ravelin aujourd’hui disparue. Le ruisseau des Riailles, actuellement enfoui, coule au pied de la porte. Celle-ci permettait d’aller jusqu’à la “ Fontette ” (actuellement appelée “ fontaine vieille ”, rue Sarcey de Sutières), un des rares points d’eau existant jusqu’à la fin du XVIIIe siècle.
The Font gate is built into the 14th century rampart (second wall). It has a bartizan with machicolation, a pedestrian way which was covered much later, situated behind the crenels and merlons. Outside the fortified walls a half- star fortification, called a “ravelin”, was built in the 16th century to strengthen the defence though it has since disappeared. The Riailles stream, now covered over, runs past to the foot of the gate. This gate led to the “Fontette” (called “old fountain” today, in rue Sarcey de Sutières), one of the rare water-supply points which existed until the end of the 18th century.
